The rocking chair “J16” by Hans J. Wegner was first put into production in 1944. It was one of Wegner’s earliest chair designs to be mass-produced. The chair was designed with inspiration from traditional Windsor and Shaker furniture.

Since its first production in the 1940s, the J16 rocking chair has remained timeless. It is truly a collector’s piece—beautiful, functional, and enduring. If your home has space for only one rocking chair, this is the one to choose. With its elegant lines and tall, graceful form, it sits in the living room like a stunning sculpture. It’s also exceptionally comfortable to sit in.

This particular chair was made in 1977 by Fredericia, and it’s in excellent condition. Both the frame and the woven seat are intact with no damage. I genuinely believe it can continue to be used for another 50 years. The color is a deep black with subtle green undertones—a wonderfully vintage look.
We’ve restored some areas where the paint had worn off, but I chose to leave the worn paint on the armrests, as a personal preference, to preserve the sense of age and character. If the buyer prefers a fully restored look, I’m happy to refinish the armrests before pickup—just let me know in advance.

This classic chair is still in production by Fredericia today. If you order it through an importer in New Zealand, the price is around $10,000 NZD with a lead time of approximately 14 weeks.

Walnut.

Small imperfection due to its age, but the piece is in good overall condition, especially considering its age and recent restoration.
